Understand radicalisation and how to keep children safe
At Eyke C of E Primary School, we have a responsibility to help protect children from the risks of radicalisation and extremism. This forms part of our wider safeguarding responsibilities.
Prevent is part of the UK Government's approach to protecting people from being drawn into terrorism. It aims to provide support to people who may be vulnerable to radicalisation.
Children and young people can encounter extremist ideas through conversations, social media, online content or other influences. We help children develop the knowledge, confidence and critical-thinking skills they need to recognise harmful influences, question what they encounter and seek help when something worries them.
What is radicalisation?
Radicalisation is the process through which a person comes to support extremist ideas or is drawn towards terrorism. It can happen gradually, and there is no single sign that proves a child is being radicalised.
Parents and carers should feel able to speak to school if they are worried about changes in a child's behaviour, the content they are accessing online or influences that may be causing them harm.
How can parents and carers help?
You can help keep children safe by:
- Talking openly with your child about what they see and experience online.
- Encouraging them to question information and consider whether sources are reliable.
- Helping them understand respect, tolerance, different viewpoints and the importance of treating others fairly.
- Encouraging them to tell a trusted adult if something online or in person makes them feel uncomfortable, frightened or pressured.
- Seeking advice if you are concerned about a child or the influences affecting them.
There is no need to wait until you have definite evidence of a problem before asking for advice. If you are concerned, please contact our safeguarding team.
