Social media, screen time and age ratings
Understanding the digital world
Children may use a wide range of apps, games and online platforms to learn, play and communicate. Features such as messaging, live chat, location sharing and user-generated content can introduce risks, particularly when children are young.
Before your child uses a new app, game or platform, find out how it works, check its age requirements and explore the privacy and safety settings together.
Social media and messaging apps
Talk to your child about communicating respectfully online, accepting friend requests only from people they know and telling a trusted adult if someone makes them feel uncomfortable.

Video games and age ratings
PEGI ratings help parents understand the age suitability of video games. Consider both the age rating and any online features, including chat, in-game purchases and contact with other players.

Things to check
- Is the app or game suitable for your child's age?
- Can strangers contact your child?
- Is their profile private?
- Can they share their location or personal information?
- Are there in-app purchases or other costs?
- Does your child know how to block and report someone?
Remember that age ratings are an important starting point, but they do not replace conversations about safe and responsible use.
