British Values

British Values at Eyke C of E Primary School

At Eyke C of E Primary School, we are committed to preparing our children to become respectful, responsible and active members of society.

British Values are woven into everyday school life and complement our Christian ethos and school values of Respect, Creativity and Perseverance. Through our curriculum, collective worship, relationships and wider opportunities, we help children understand the importance of fairness, kindness, individual rights and responsibilities.

We actively promote the five fundamental British Values identified by the Department for Education.

Democracy

We believe that every child should have a voice and that their opinions matter. Children are encouraged to express their views, listen to others and understand how decisions can be made fairly. Through pupil leadership groups, class discussions and opportunities to contribute to school improvement, children experience democracy in action.

At Eyke, this includes: School Council elections, pupil voice activities and children contributing ideas to improve school life.

The Rule of Law

We help children understand why rules and laws are important in keeping people safe and ensuring everyone is treated fairly. Our school expectations are rooted in respect, responsibility and positive relationships. Children learn that their choices have consequences and that rules help create a safe and happy community.

At Eyke, this includes: Understanding our school rules, learning about rights and responsibilities, online safety and exploring why laws are important in wider society.

Individual Liberty

We encourage children to develop independence, confidence and the ability to make informed choices. Within a safe and supportive environment, children are encouraged to express themselves, explore their interests and take responsibility for their decisions. We teach children to recognise their rights while respecting the rights of others.

At Eyke, this includes: Opportunities for pupil leadership, making choices about learning, expressing opinions and learning how to stay safe.

Mutual Respect

Respect is one of our three core school values and underpins everything we do. We teach children to value others, appreciate different perspectives and treat everyone with kindness and consideration. Through positive relationships, children learn the importance of listening, empathy and working together.

At Eyke, this includes: Collaborative learning, supporting younger pupils, celebrating achievements and promoting positive relationships throughout the school.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

As a Church of England school, our Christian ethos encourages children to show compassion, understanding and respect towards everyone. Through Religious Education, collective worship and our wider curriculum, children learn about different religions, cultures and worldviews. We encourage curiosity, thoughtful discussion and an appreciation of the diversity of modern Britain.

At Eyke, this includes: Learning about different faiths, celebrating cultural diversity and exploring similarities and differences with openness and respect.

British Values in Action: Pupil Leadership

At Eyke, British Values are not simply taught; they are experienced through meaningful opportunities for children to contribute to school life. Our pupil leadership groups enable children to put these values into practice, developing their confidence, sense of responsibility and understanding of how they can make a positive difference.

School Council

Our School Council promotes democracy by giving children a voice in decisions that affect their school. Representatives listen to their peers, share ideas and work together to bring about positive change.
