Preparation for starting school
- Morning routine- talk about the order you will do things before you leave for school.
- Toileting- make sure your child recognises when they need the toilet, practise wiping, flushing and washing their hands independently.
- Putting on a coat- place your coat upside down by your feet, put your arms in the holes and hold on to it. Flip it over the top of your head and arms.
- Shoe stickers- cut a picture sticker in half and place in each shoe. When putting the shoes on, the sticker will be whole again.
- School uniform- practise dressing and undressing and establishing an order that works. Do this with the PE kit too.
- Lunch- practise carrying a plate of food to the table and using a knife and fork. If you are packed lunch, practise opening packets and boxes. Discuss the order that you eat your lunch.
- Emotions- talk about their needs and feelings.
- Hygiene- show your child how to blow their nose and wash their hands.
- Sharing- practise taking turns, sharing and tidying.
- Name- practise recognising their name.
Reading to your child and talking about books is one of the best things you can do!
