Phonics

Little Wandle

At Eyke, phonics is taught using the structure of our systematic synthetic programme ‘Little Wandle Letters & Sounds Revised’. This comprehensive programme uses letter frames, flash cards, phonic games and listening activities.

Using the Little Wandle Letters & Sounds lesson structure, each session follows the same format of introduce, revisit and review, teach, practise and apply. This ensures that children learn new sounds whilst applying taught sounds to their reading of new words. Children work on decoding, segmenting and blending in every lesson. Phonics lessons at Eyke are designed to meet the children’s needs based on our on-going phonic assessments.

During daily direct teaching sessions, the teacher provides a clear model and pronunciation of sounds, observing and assessing children, to ensure those who have a secure understanding are able to move on as well as be aware of those children who need to revisit certain sounds.

In addition to the daily phonics sessions there are three reading practise sessions per week. The same book is read in all of these sessions to increase fluency and books with the sounds being learnt that week are sent home to read with parents too. In addition to this, a take home book that is not fully decodable by the child is sent home to be enjoyed with an adult, as part of a shared reading opportunity.

Parents can also be supported at home by the Little Wandle approach that we use at Eyke by following the link.
